Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymph Drainage is a gentle manual treatment technique that is based on four basic Dr. Vodder strokes: the stationary circle, pump, rotary and scoop.
Massage should not be confused with MLD. MLD is very specific, gentle and rhythmical. It is preformed in a precise sequence by a highly trained Certified Lymphedema Therapist.
The main goal in treatment of lymph edema is to reroute the lymph flow around blocked areas into more centrally located healthy lymph vessels, which drain into the venous system.
Other benefits of MLD for non-lymph edema related problems are:
• Chronic sinusitis
• Chronic headache/ migraine
• Scars, either cosmetic scars or burn scars
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
CDT consists of a four components:• Manual Lymph Drainage
• Compression Therapy
• Decongestive Exercises
• Skin Care
Currently there is no cure for lymphedema.
The main goal of treatment is to return the lymph edema to
a stage of latency, utilizing remaining lymph vessels and other lymphatic pathways. The near normal size of the limb should be maintained and re-accumulation of the lymph flow should be prevented. In addition, goals are prevention and elimination of infections and the reduction and removal of fibrotic tissues.
Garment Fitting
Patients with lymph edema graduate from bandages during the CDT phase to elastic compression garments. Compression garments are gradient compression designed to maintain the reduced limb, keep swelling down, improve circulation and prevent re-accumulation of fluid. It is important that only trained therapists with a full understanding of pathology of lymph edema and its related conditions take the appropriate measurements.Compression garments intended for Lymphedema or the the prevention of Lymphedema ARE NOT pantyhose you buy at the store, nor are they ACE Bandages. Gradient Compression Garments are specially fitted and designed for each person.
