Alana's Journey:
In 1997, I became a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), completing my education at the Finger Lakes School of Massage in Ithaca New York. I immediately began to work as an LMT. In 1998 The Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin named me to their “The BEST in the Southern Tier” edition for Massage Therapy.
I continued my advanced training with certificates in Medical Massage and Touch for Health-Applied Kinesiology Levels I-III.
Although I found massage therapy rewarding, I was particularly drawn to the “swelling” many of my female clients presented during their massage sessions. When I inquired about the cause of the swelling, my clients would say that nothing could be done about it… that their doctors said it was due to the cancer treatments and was just something "they had to live with."
That answer was not acceptable to me - I KNEW there had to be something better for these women. Through my tireless research, I found the name of this swelling: LYMPHEDEMA.
I then committed to finding the very best training to become a Lymphedema Therapist. I found the Dr. Vodder School and began my journey into the fascinating world of Lymphedema.
In 2001, I traveled to Austria to complete my training at that prestigious Dr. Vodder School.
In 2003, I opened The Myers Center, specializing in the field of Lymphedema. Promoting awareness and education through public speaking and word of mouth, I am blessed to have become an established and trusted Lymphedema Therapist in the Southern Tier located in upstate New York.
I am passionate about helping men and women learn about Lymphedema, how to prevent it and how to maintain it.
In keeping with my drive to stay current and keep my training and skills perfected, I was accepted to sit for the nationally recognized and highly respected Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) examination. LANA has developed a national standard and exam to qualify highly trained therapists. I successfully completed the examination in the summer of 2011, earning the title CLT-LANA.
As of 2011, I am the ONLY CLT-LANA Therapist in Broome County NY.
I can't count the amount of times during a consultation a client will say to me, " Why hasn't anybody ever explained this to me?" I love to take the time to explain lymphedema to anyone that asks me. This condition can become overwhelming but it doesn't have to be, given the right information and tools. I am honored and thrilled to be able to work at something that I love so much. Thank you for your time.
